Naturopathic treatment, homeopathy and acupuncture: The Germans are front runners in the European Union in the use of medical treatment that does not fall under the rubric of conventional medicine.
In Germany, more than 60 per cent of the population take advantage of offers from the field of alternative medicine ranging from naturopathic treatment to traditional Chinese medicine. Thus, in the European Union, Germany lies completely up front in the acceptance of alternative medicine.
As a Complement to Conventional Medicine
The term "alternative medicine" misleads a little. Only a very few patients choose to use alternative treatment as a substitute for conventional medicine."I would therefore rather prefer to use the term complementary medicine", explains Claudia Witt. In May 2008, she was awarded the endowed professorship of the Karl and Veronica Carstens’ Foundation from the Charité University Clinic in Berlin, for studies in this field of medicine. "From our projects with health insurance companies we know that patients – and, above all, chronically ill patients – frequently use both forms of medicine. Many take, for example, pain killers and, in addition, have also acupuncture. Complementary means ‘additional’ so that the term ‘complementary medicine’ describes the reality much better”.
